Itinerary
Day 1: Travel from Entebbe to Mbale
Wake up for your early morning breakfast and drive to Eastern Uganda with a stopover in Jinja town for lunch and visit River Nile’s source for a boat ride on lake Victoria. After, proceed further east to Mbale up to Mount Elgon. The mount is an extinct shield volcano located on the border of Uganda and Kenya, north of Kisumu and west of Kitale.
Its highest point is named Wagagai and its located entirely within Uganda. Mountain Elgon is protected by Mount Elgon national park which stretches over an area of approximately 1,279 square kilometers. Arrive in Mbale in late evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Kapkway – Tutum Camp (2667 m)
After your breakfast, check out of the hotel/lodge and proceed to Kapkway Exploration Center through Sipi where the headquarters of Uganda Wildlife Authority are located. Here, you will meet your climbing crew that includes porters, cook and guide.
The hike begins to Tutum Cave Camp passing through montane and bamboo forest vegetation. After reaching the cave, you will set the camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Tutum Camp – Kajeri Camp (3383 m)
On this third day of the hike, you will proceed to Kajeri camp at an elevation of about 3383 m after your breakfast. The estimated distance to your next camp is about 17km on foot. Reach the camp for dinner and overnight stay
Day 4: Kajeri Camp – Mude Camp (3,500m)
After your breakfast, you proceed to Mude camp at an altitude of about 3,500 m above the sea level. The hike to Mude camp takes a whole day with a total distance of about 25km with a few stopovers for lunch. After, proceed with the hike up-to the final camp for dinner and overnight
Day 5: Mude Camp – Wagagai peak (4321 m)
On this day, you will wake up for your breakfast and proceed with the trail to the peak passing through moorland zone. The total distance of the hike is about 18km and when you get there, have your dinner and an overnight
Day 6: Mude camp descend to Budadiri
The 6th day of the trek is dedicated to descending. You will move down the mountain towards the gate of Budadiri located close to Mbale.
Day 7: Departure
On the 7th day of your adventure into eastern Uganda, you will transfer from Budadiri gate to Mbale town and then proceed to Entebbe international airport for your departure flight.
