Rwenzori Mountains Trek Itinerary (Bukurungu Trail)
Day 1: Arrival & transfer to Rwenzori Mountains ( Snow Heights Lodge )
You will be welcomed and picked up from Entebbe airport by the company representative and the she driver guides. He will brief you about your safari and then later head to Kasese – home to the highest point of Uganda. During the transfer, you will view different features like craters, plantations, hills and valleys. Also, you will also have you en route lunch and then proceed to the lodge of your booking where you will arrive in the late afternoon.

DAY 2 –Start the Rwenzori Trek to Kasanzi Camp (2310 m)
You will have your breakfast at the lodge and then walk to the Rwenzori National Park gate for gear checking and pre-hike briefing. Start from Mukorokimi, meet guides and porters. Walk through coffee plantations, villages, schools, and interact with the Bakonzo community. During the hike, you will see different plant species including Disa stairssi, Scadoxus cyrtanthiflorus, impatiens apiculata. Wildlfe species to spot include the black and white colobus monkeys, Rwenzori turaco, and chimpanzee nests.
Vegetation zones: Montane rainforest with bamboo valleys
Duration: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Kasanzi Camp
DAY 3: HIKE FROM KASANZI CAMP – RWIHO CAMP (2900 m)
Trail: Through heather zone with moss-draped trees, heather, Scencio, Alchemilla, blackberries.
Wildlife & Plants: Black & white colobus, vervet monkeys, sunbirds, Rwenzori turaco, giant lobelias, everlasting flowers, rock shelters
Duration: 5–6 hours (includes lunch stop)
Overnight: Rwiho Camp
DAY 4: HIKE FROM RWIHO – KAMBEHO CAMP (3750 m)
After breakfast, continue with the hike along River Lhume, climb the steep Mughuli bypass, descend to Lake Mughuli (MTN network coverage). You will explore waterfalls around the camp and also spot some wildlife species like the Rwenzori red-duiker, rock & tree hyrax plus wild pigs.
Duration: 6–7 hours (with Mulhalhama viewpoint stop)
Overnight: Kambeho Camp
DAY 5: KIMBEHO – LAMIA CAMP (4000 m)
Enjoy your breakfast and proceed with the hike to Lamia camp. The 5 hours hike will lead you to Bukurungu Lake Camp with special views of different wildlife like the red mountain duiker and rock hyrax.
Wildlife: Red mountain duiker, rock hyrax
Overnight: Lamia Camp
DAY 6: HIKE FROM LAMIA CAMP – LAKE BUKURUNGU CAMP (4091 m)
Wake up for your breakfast at the camp and head to Lake Bukurungu camp through Alchemilla, giant lobelia and unique leaf species. The gentle hike will take 3 to 4 hours and while at the camp, you will have panoramic views of Rwenzori main peaks (Edward, Baker, Margherita, Alexandra, Vittorio Emanuela, Kihuma, Mount Gessi)
Purpose: Acclimatization and photography
Overnight: Bukurungu Lake Camp
DAY 7 – EXPLORATION DAY AROUND BUKURUNGU LAKE
Activities: Leisure hikes, photography, acclimatization
Optional: Explore surrounding ridges and viewpoints (~4700 m)
Focus: Enjoy alpine wilderness and breathtaking views
DAY 8: DESCEND TO JOHNMAATE CAMP (3505 m)
Trail: Descend from Bukurungu Lake to Johnmaate Camp (4–5 hours).
Overnight: Johnmaate Camp
DAY 9 – BIGO TO NYABITABA CAMP & NYAKALENGIJA
Walk down valley through Johnmaate Lunch at Nyamulenju rest shelter. Cross moss-covered rocks descend to Kurt Shafer Bridge (confluence of Mubuku & Bujuku rivers). Reach Nyabitaba Camp for lunch and after proceed to Nyakalengijja for transfer to the lodge.
Duration: 6–7 hours
Overnight at Snow Height lodge
DAY 10: DRIVE BACK TO ENTEBBE
Have your breakfast at the lodge and meet your driver guide for the transfer back to Entebbe for your departure flight.
