At a height of 5,109 meters, Margherita peak is the Uganda’s highest point and Africa’s third highest peak after that of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. The peak is located on Mount Stanley, the highest massif of Rwenzori ranges also known as the mountains of the moon.

Rwenzori mountains lower slopes are covered with tropical rainforest, while higher elevations feature heath and moorland zones with giant lobelias, groundsels, and other endemic plant species. They are protected by Rwenzori mountains national park which is a home to various wildlife, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, Rwenzori turacos, and several species of monkeys and birds.

Climbing Margherita peak

Climbing Margherita Peak is a challenging endeavour that requires significant preparation and acclimatization due to its high altitude. Here are some important considerations:

Routes and Difficulty

Climbing Margherita peak involves traversing rocky terrain, glaciers, and potentially treacherous weather conditions. The most common routes start from the Ugandan side, usually accessed through the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Among these include the Kilembe route and Central circuit trail. The trek to Margherita Peak typically takes about 7 to 10 days, depending on the chosen route and climbers’ acclimatization needs.

Guides and Permits

Hikers of Rwenzori mountains are not allowed to take individual hikes but rather escorted by experienced guides and porters. These rangers have an ideal knowledge about the mountains and are always ready to answer the hiker’s questions. Climbers must obtain permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Equipment

For safety purposes, hikers are advised to buy or hire essential hiking gears to help in summit. Among these gears include; climbing boots, crampons, snow glasses, rubber boots, gloves, ice axes, and warm clothing suitable for extreme cold and wet conditions.
